Acupuncture for Sciatica

The patient

72 year old male patient presented with sudden onset of left side sciatica pain extending to calf and ankle. Patient experienced very high level of constant pain and could not sleep. His m


obility was also affected, patient had to stop his daily walks and driving. Prescribed painkillers provided temporary pain relief. Patient was generally well and active with no previous history of sciatica problem. 

Treatment

Patient received three weekly sessions of acupuncture treatments and was advised to wear under-layer and thick socks to keep warm.

Treatment outcome

Patient experienced immediate pain relief at the first session and gradually was able to sleep for longer hours undisturbed. After the third visit, patient had no pain at all and was able to enjoy his regular walks again.


General advice

It is advisable for patients to keep warm when having a bad sciatica flare up, i.e. cover hips with long line jacket when going outside, wear long socks that cover ankles properly rather than trainer socks and cover feet with socks and indoor shoes when at home. The warmth will improve circulation and aid recover.
