Acupuncture for insomnia

The patient

Female patient in early 40s suffering from chronic insomnia. She would wake up up to 7 times a night and struggle to go back to sleep. Other symptoms include night sweats, tinnitus, vertex headache, shoulder pain and tiredness. 

Treatments

5 weekly sessions of acupuncture and usage of Chinese herbal medicine.

Outcome:

Patient was sleeping through on most nights during the week. Occasionally wake up once a night and able to fall back to sleep quickly. Patient no longer suffered from night sweats, tinnitus, headache or shoulder pain. 

Lifestyle change

Patient was advised to keep a detailed food diary for a week and identified areas for improvement herself.
