Acupuncture and herbal medicine for ADHD

Acupuncture and herbal medicine for ADHD

A patient in her mid-30s was recently diagnosed with ADHD. She presented with difficulty concentrating, poor memory and comprehension. She also reported bloating, severe sinusitis, difficulty falling asleep, excessive dreaming, fatigue, and eczema on the elbows. In addition, she experienced pain around the knees, ankles, and the soles of the feet.

A combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine was prescribed to address her symptoms, along with dietary advice to support treatment. After five sessions of acupuncture and taking herbal medicine, her digestion improved significantly when she adhered to the dietary recommendations. Pain she was experiencing subsided. She was better able to manage stress, and both sleep quality and energy levels improved. Her eczema and sinusitis also showed noticeable improvement.

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), digestive weakness is often associated with Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency. Over time, this deficiency can lead to the formation of Phlegm-Dampness, which may cause lethargy, obstruct the sensory orifices, and impair clear thinking and concentration. Phlegm-Dampness can also obstruct the proper nourishment of the skin, contributing to dermatological conditions.

In this case, the patient’s inattentive-type ADHD was effectively managed by addressing the underlying digestive imbalance. By strengthening the Spleen and resolving Phlegm-Dampness, a positive and sustained clinical outcome was achieved.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine for Menopausal symptoms

TCM Perspective:
This case demonstrates the efficacy of integrating acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary/lifestyle adjustments to support women through menopause. This approach facilitates achievable, body-respecting changes that yield profoundly liberating outcomes.

Discussion:

A growing number of women are choosing Chinese medicine to manage menopausal symptoms. This case underscores its potential as a highly effective and rewarding therapeutic pathway, addressing the complex interplay of physical and emotional changes during this transition.

Client Presentation:

A middle-aged woman presented with:

  • Fatigue
  • Bloating after meals
  • Eczema
  • Joint pain
  • Water retention
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling cold
  • Sleep disruption (frequent nighttime waking)
  • Anxiety
  • Brain fog

TCM Evaluation:

Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis identified:

  1. Spleen Qi Deficiency: Weakened digestion and nutrient absorption due to modern diet and erratic eating patterns. This led to fatigue (Qi deficiency) and damp accumulation (water retention, erratic urination pattern).

  2. Age-Related Kidney Qi Decline: Contributing to urinary frequency and feeling cold all the time.

  3. Heart-Kidney Disharmony & Liver Disturbance: Excess worrying and constant to plan for family affected the Heart-Kidney connection. Heart Fire and Liver disturbance (stress) contributed to restless sleep ("Shen" disturbance) and anxiety.

  4. Dampness & Blood Stasis: Manifesting as eczema and joint pain.

A comprehensive TCM protocol was implemented:

- Acupuncture: To regulate organ function, strengthen Spleen Qi, drain dampness, calm the Shen (mind), clear brain fog, and reduce anxiety.

- Dietary Modifications: Focused on supporting Spleen function, reducing damp-forming foods, and optimizing nutrient/energy intake.

- Herbal Formula: Customized to her needs to tonify Spleen and Kidney Qi, nourish vital energies, resolve dampness, and support the acupuncture treatment goals.

Outcomes at 8-Week Follow-Up:

  • Digestion & Energy: Complete resolution of post-meal discomfort. Significantly improved energy and productivity enabled her to launch a side business.

  • Physical Symptoms: Elimination of water retention and joint pain; restoration of normal urination patterns.

  • Sleep: Able to fall asleep quickly and experienced uninterrupted sleep throughout the night.

  • Mental Well-being: Resolution of brain fog and significant reduction in anxiety.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine for middle-aged women wellbeing support

 The client

A female client in her early 40s presented with a range of symptoms, including digestive issues, anxiety, insomnia, brain fog, and frequent urination during both the day and night. She reported difficulties digesting gluten, dairy products, and sugar. Additionally, she was taking medication to manage the frequent and urgent need to urinate.

The treatment

A comprehensive treatment plan was developed, which included weekly acupuncture sessions and a tailored herbal medicine regimen. The treatment aimed to restore digestive function, calm the mind, improve sleep quality, alleviate brain fog, and address the issue of frequent urination. Detailed dietary and lifestyle recommendations were also provided to complement and enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

The outcome

Over time, the client experienced significant improvements in her symptoms. Her digestion became more efficient, and the constant bloated feeling subsided, allowing her to enjoy meals without discomfort. She reported feeling calmer and noticed a return of mental clarity, which led to increased productivity at work. Additionally, her sleep quality improved significantly—she was able to sleep through the night without the need to get up to urinate, and the constant urge to urinate during the day was also resolved.
