Acupuncture and herbal medicine for secondary infertility

Acupuncture for secondary infertility

39 years old female patient had been trying to conceive naturally for a year for a second child before seeking help from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Fertility tests revealed low AMH level. Patient was also diagnosed with under-active thyroid.

After nine month of regular acupuncture and taking herbal medicine to help regulate menstrual cycle and improve ovulation, patient fell pregnant naturally.

It can take longer for patients to conceive the second child due to increased age, erratic eating pattern, demanding family and working life. Treatments are focused on nourishing the body, improving digestion and quality of sleep, stimulating ovulation and lengthening fertility window.

Extreme postpartum fatigue and pain under foot

 Presenting case

Patient experienced extreme fatigue, lower back pain, pain under the foot and overall body ache after giving birth to her second child.

Treatment

Acupuncture sessions were given to help with the pain and general weakness. As patient was still breastfeeding, herbal medicine was suggested after weaning.

Outcome

Patient felt much better in all areas after the third acupuncture session. Her energy had also improved.

Pain under foot is a sign of weak Kidney energy from a Chinese medicine point of view. Child bearing and giving birth consume a lot of Kidney energy in women and in some will manifest in physical symptoms afterwards. Acupuncture can be a very effective treatment to support the body to recover postpartum and boost Kidney energy to eliminate associated pain and weakness.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine for infertility

 The patient

Healthy female in her 20s has been trying naturally for 5 years without success. Her and her partner have a healthy diet, exercise regularly and all their fertility tests showed results within the normal range. Patient came for treatment to support her first round of funded IVF cycle.

The treatment

A full diagnostic consultation revealed areas that needed to be strengthened through treatment. Dietary and lifestyle advice was given to improve health, help boost fertility and relieve impact of stress. It is very understandable for patients to want to start their IVF cycle as soon as possible after trying for a long time, however it is highly advisable to allow time to regulate menstrual cycle and improve body condition first for the best outcome. Patient took this on board and received ten weekly sessions of acupuncture alongside herbal medicine at the same time targeting different stages of her cycle. Overall improvement was felt on digestion, quality of sleep, energy and fertility signs.

The outcome

Patient had a positive natural conception pregnancy test just days before her IVF cycle was about to start.

There has been an increased number of young healthy females having to go through IVF cycle to get pregnant. Through closely monitored acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment alongside dietary and lifestyle changes, it is very possible to achieve natural pregnancy and to prepare the body for successful  assisted pregnancy.
